Usage

A retort stand provides a fixed vertical support for laboratory accessories used during formulation and processing. It normally consists of a heavy base with a vertical metal rod to which clamps, holders and other attachments can be mounted at different heights.

For cannabinoid processing, a retort stand is especially useful for holding a thermometer or temperature probe in a consistent position inside a beaker while the formulation is being heated and mixed. This prevents the probe from resting against the bottom or side of the beaker, where it could measure the temperature of the glass or hotplate rather than the actual formulation.

The height and position of the clamp can be adjusted so the probe remains submerged in the material without interfering with the magnetic stir bar. Once positioned correctly, the setup can remain stable throughout the heating and mixing process without needing to hold the thermometer manually.

A retort stand can also be used to hold beakers, bottles or other containers at an angle. This is useful when transferring viscous distillates or formulations from containers that are difficult to empty completely. By securing the container in a tilted position, the material can collect toward the opening and continue draining without the container needing to be held by hand.

This becomes especially useful when the container can also be gently heated from above or from the side while it is held at an angle. Keeping the walls and remaining material warm reduces viscosity and allows more of the formulation to flow toward the outlet, which can significantly reduce residue left behind in awkward bottles or vessels.

Advantages

Keeps temperature probes in a fixed and reproducible position
Prevents probes from resting against the beaker wall or bottom
Allows hands-free positioning of probes, containers and other equipment
Can hold containers at an angle to improve transfer of viscous formulations and reduce residual material

Disadvantages

Requires a larger work area and stable, flat surface

Specification notes

Vertical rod tall enough for the intended beaker and equipment setup
Clamps capable of securely holding the intended probes, vessels or containers

Safety notes

The base should remain on a flat and stable surface during use
Clamps should be securely tightened before equipment is positioned above a hot formulation
When a container is held at an angle, the clamp and stand should be stable enough to prevent the vessel from rotating or slipping
Heating a clamped container can also heat the clamp and surrounding metal parts, so contact with heated components should be avoided
