What is β-Ocimene?

β-Ocimene is a naturally occurring terpene with the molecular formula C10H16. It has an open carbon chain containing three carbon-carbon double bonds, rather than the ring-shaped structure found in terpenes such as α-Pinene.

β-Ocimene can occur in different forms depending on the arrangement around one of its double bonds. The trans form, also called (E)-β-Ocimene, is commonly found in plants and is one of the main naturally occurring forms.

Reported effects

Direct behavioural research on isolated β-Ocimene is still limited. Its uplifting and energizing reputation is therefore less strongly established than the effects reported for better studied terpenes such as Linalool or β-Myrcene.

Uplifting & energizing

Limited evidence

β-Ocimene is commonly associated with a more bright and stimulating terpene profile. However, direct studies measuring uplifting or energizing effects from isolated β-Ocimene are still scarce, so this effect should be considered less established than many of the other categories in this library.

Molecular targets

No specific mammalian receptor, ion channel or transporter has yet been clearly established as a direct molecular target of β-Ocimene.

Research suggests that β-Ocimene can influence biological signalling, but the available evidence is not yet strong enough to assign it to one of the molecular target categories used in this library.
